Remembering London 2012 Olympic track cyclist nicknamed 'quadzilla' after thigh picture went viral a

Robert Forstemann never skips leg day. Ever.

As the nation remembers the London 2012 Olympic Games ten years on, talkSPORT can't get the image of the German cyclist's quads from its mind.

A photo tweeted by New Zealand cyclist Greg Henderson of Forstemann’s legs compared to compatriot Andre Greipel quickly went viral during the 2012 Games.

Nicknamed Quadzilla, Forstemann was a real hit in the capital and came away with a bronze medal in the team in the team sprint - an event the German team went into London 2012 as world champions.

He was no match for Chris Hoy and the Team GB track cycling team at the Games, though, as the men took four of the five golds on offer.

But a lot of talk was on the power in his legs, which he told The Telegraph in 2018 they could help sort you breakfast in the mornings.

“My power to strength ratio comes from the gym but my speed comes from my training on the track. Sometimes I ride in big gears to work my strength on the track, such as standing accelerations, but mainly I am working on speed.

"Another good training session that gives me a lot of power is riding a road bike into the mountains. I will go into the mountains and do 4-6 times uphill, with efforts of 1-1.5 minutes in a big gear. This really gives me a lot of power but it’s really, really hard. A few years ago I powered a toaster for a fun video – producing 700 watts for two minutes – and this is basically the same training.”

On his 'Quadzilla' nickname, he later said he was proud.

“It was an honour to get this as a track cyclist because I'm not a bodybuilder or something like this.”

He may not be a bodybuilder, but his 73cm thighs will be the envy of many.

And how exactly does he achieve such ridiculous quads? In an interview with Men’s Health, he said there was plenty of squats, deadlifts and leg press involved.

London 2012 may be ten long years ago now, but Forstemann still doesn’t skip leg day if his Instagram is anything to go by.
